A toddler who had been on life support after an alleged assault died late Monday, Feb. 12, at Loma Linda University Medical Center, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department announced Tuesday.
Sheriff’s officials said charges of murder and assault resulting in the death of a child were being filed against his mother’s boyfriend, Arthur Thomas Davies, 34, of Yucca Valley, according to the news release. Unless that changes, Davies is expected in San Bernardino County Superior Court on Wednesday.
He was in custody Tuesday at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga. Bail is set at $1 million.
The 1-year-old boy, who lived in Yucca Valley and has not been identified by name, had been airlifted from Hi-Desert Medical Center in Joshua Tree to Loma Linda on Saturday. The next day, the staff at Loma Linda requested a sheriff’s deputy due to the “suspicious” injuries to the child, sheriff’s officials have said.
Detectives working in collaboration with the medical center’s forensic pediatricians determined that Davies — listed in jail records as 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds — was responsible for the child’s injuries and arrested him Sunday afternoon. He is not the biological father, authorities said.
Doctors pronounced the toddler dead at 10:44 p.m. Monday.
