A Yucca Valley man is charged with murder and assault on a child causing death in the slaying of his girlfriend’s 1-year-old son, who died at a Loma Linda hospital Monday, Feb. 12.

Arthur Thomas Davies, 34, made his first court appearance Wednesday, Feb. 14, in San Bernardino County Superior Court in Joshua Tree. Commissioner John Burdick entered not guilty pleas for Davies on the two felony charges, and another count that acknowledges the murder charge constitutes a serious felony, according to court records.

The toddler victim has not been identified by name and is only referred to as “John Doe” in the criminal complaint filed by the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office.

Davies remains in custody with bail set at $1 million. He is in custody at the Morongo Basin Station.

The toddler, who lived in Yucca Valley, was airlifted Saturday, Feb. 10, from Hi-Desert Medical Center in Joshua Tree to Loma Linda University Medical Center, according to a sheriff’s news release.

The next day, the staff at Loma Linda requested a sheriff’s deputy due to the “suspicious” injuries to the child, the release said.

Davies is not the biological father of the child, authorities said.
