Holding an oversized red cardboard key in his hands, Simon Kim walked through the front door of a two-story Moreno Valley house in disbelief.

Also in his hands were the actual keys to the beige house, which were turned over to him Thursday, Dec. 21, as part of a program providing combat-wounded veterans like himself with free homes.

“This is crazy,” Kim said. “I keep saying this is like winning the Lotto. It’s just unreal.”

The 32-year-old single father plans to move into the house in February with his three-year-old son, Levi, and his mother, who has been looking after them at his parents’ home in Anaheim, where they had been living.

Kim said he never could have afforded such a home on his own and couldn’t believe its size.

“Definitely a lot more doors than I expected,” he said.
