Woman who fell to her death into San Bernardino flood channel is identified
A 44-year-old San Bernardino resident has been identified as the woman who fell out of her car that was leaning precariously over a flood-control channel after a crash Sunday, coroner’s officials said.
Elena Meza was pronounced dead at the scene of the 12:20 a.m. crash on East Gilbert Avenue in San Bernardino, according to coroner supervisor Tony Campisi and police reports.
Meza had drifted to the side of the road and hit the guardrail, San Bernardino police Lt. Mike Madden has said. The 10-foot-deep channel is right where Gilbert makes a 90-degree curve and becomes Perris Hill Park Road, just south of Pacific High School.
Madden said that onlookers were yelling at the woman to stay inside the vehicle – but she opened the door and fell to her death.
