It’s tough to predict when the first snowfall will hit the local mountains, but this much is for sure: There WILL be snow in Riverside on Saturday, Dec. 2 — enough of it to enjoy some sledding.

That’s the day of the annual Winter Wonderland, a co-production of the Arlington Business Partnership and the city’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department that will bring more than 50 tons of snow and wintertime fun to Arlington Heights Sports Park.

Organizers expect as many as 3,000 people to attend, so if you’d like to carve out time to sled down a large mound of powder, they suggest buying tickets soon. Sledding time is sold in 20-minute increments, with reservations on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier snow sessions sell out first, says Ebony Perkins, recreation services coordinator for the city of Riverside.

This will be the first year for the city and Arlington Business Partnership to jointly host the event, a nine-year tradition in the Arlington Business Improvement District.

“A lot of people don’t have the chance to see snow,” says Andrew Guerra, executive director of the Arlington Business Partnership. “Plus, we’re offering photos with Santa and more.”

Other activities include face-painting, carnival games with prizes and live entertainment. Santa, by the way, will arrive via helicopter, not the traditional sleigh.

Tickets may be purchased at any Riverside community center and via the city’s website.
