William Fernandez paces Hillcrest victory over North

RIVERSIDE >> Regardless of position, William Fernandez makes big plays.
The 6-foot-1, 180-pound senior had two touchdown receptions in the second half as Hillcrest defeated North, 23-14, Thursday night in a nonleague game at Zach Earp Stadium.
“The opportunity was great, but I couldn’t have done it without my teammates,” Fernandez said. “We came out to play strong because we didn’t want to lose at home.”
Fernandez had hauled in four catches for 126 yards to as Hillcrest (3-1 overall) beat North for the second consecutive season.
“I had to score for this team,” Fernadnez said. “Tonight was for my team.”
Claude Dent, a transfer from Riverside Poly, had five catches for 117 yards and two touchdowns for North (1-2 overall), which failed to capitalize on a pair of late opportunities.
“It’s a tough loss,” North coach Doug DuBois said. “We just have to improve each week, and this is a game that hurts but you have to erase it and move on to the next one and keep grinding.”
Hillcrest took a 7-0 lead when Jalen Jefferson grabbed a tipped pass and went 85 yards to the end zone early in the second quarter.
North tied it with less than 5 minutes remaining in the first half when QB Nick Satcher found Dent on the right side for a 37-yard touchdown.
The Trojans went ahead, 10-7, on a 33-yard field goal from Nick Lawson in the third quarter, and took a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter when Cordell Labrie scrambled and tossed it to Fernandez, who shed a tackle and got two blocks on the way to the end zone as time expired.
