VALENCIA — Valencia overcame a slow start to run through Great Oak 54-23 in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 football playoffs.

Valencia trailed, 9-7, in the second quarter after Great Oak forced a safety. Valencia then scored 27 unanswered points to take a 34-9 lead with 10:43 left in the third quarter.

Quarterback Connor Downs led the way for Valencia, going 14 of 25 for 282 yards with two touchdowns.

“I do take a lot of responsibility for the slow start, but I felt like we all picked it up together,” Downs said.

Valencia’s Luring Paialii had three touchdowns on four carries with 29 yards rushing.

“It felt very good to get the win, and we came out with the proper intensity because we knew this game was going to be a dogfight,” Paialii said.

Mykael Wright had 8 receptions for 143 yards with two touchdowns and was also effective on coverage on defense.

Running back Moises Haynes had two touchdowns, and Jayvaun Wilson had a 40-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Great Oak struggled to get anything going after losing their 9-7 lead. Quarterback McGwire Bustamante was 20 of 30 for 145 yards and two touchdowns. Notre Dame commit Jack Lamb had a 19-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter for Great Oak.

“I’m proud of my team,” Great Oak Head Coach Robbie Robinson said. “I thought we accomplished a lot of things, and we ran into a really good Valencia team, and they executed really well, and we fell.”

Valencia will travel to take on Norco in the second round of the Division 2 playoffs.
