Update: The Trojans rolled past Cal State Fullerton, 84-42, on Friday night and things probably will not be much tougher tonight. North Dakota State lost its opener at UC Santa Barbara, 85-66. … USC started sophomore guard Jonah Mathews on Friday in place of guard De’Anthony Melton, who is being held out over concerns of his eligibility as a result of the FBI investigation into the program. Mathews scored 11 points but made only three of nine shots. … One area USC will want to improve is its shooting percentage. The Trojans shot 41 percent against Cal State Fullerton. … USC guard Elijah Stewart needs 13 points to reach 1,000 in his college career. … Duke-transfer Derryck Thornton scored 11 points and grabbed three rebounds in his Trojans’ debut. … USC has won its past 19 nonconference home games. … After this contest, USC plays its first road game of the season against Vanderbilt on Sunday.
