Two dead in fiery traffic collision on Gilman Springs Road

Two men were killed and one person injured in a fiery traffic collision Monday, July 3, on Gilman Springs Road, south of Moreno Valley near Mystic Lake, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred at 11:30 p.m. on Gilman Springs Road, east of the intersection of Bridge Street.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a 60-year-old man from Moreno Valley was driving west on Gilman Springs Road when he lost control of his red 1992 Chevrolet Corvette. The vehicle drifted into the opposite lane and into the path of a silver Buick.

The Corvette burst into flames and the driver died at the scene.

The driver of the Buick, John McDaniel, 60, and his 77-year-old passenger were trapped in their vehicle.

A Hemet police officer was first at the scene and, with the help of another witness, was able to remove McDaniel from the Buick, according to the CHP.

McDaniel and his passenger, who are both from Los Angeles, were transported by ambulance to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley. The passenger at 1:36 a.m.

Authorities have not ruled out alcohol, drugs or reckless driving as contributing factors to the collision, the CHP said.
