A call for help heard near Limonite Avenue and Dodd Street in Jurupa Valley ultimately led to the boat rescue of three people stranded on an island in the Santa Ana River in Jurupa Valley on Tuesday night, according to a Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire news release.
The first major storm of the winter dumped substantial rain that fed to what otherwise is a slow-moving stream in the riverbed, in this case creating a land island about 150 feet offshore.
The incident was reported at 6:04 p.m. and just over three hours later all three victims were on shore being evaluated by paramedics.
County fire’s swift water rescue team, made up of four crew members, launched its inflatable boat. It took two trips to fetch the trio off the island.
Riverside Police Department’s Air 1 helicopter hovered overhead to assist with lighting, according to the release, and the county Sheriff’s Department also assisted.
