Trade shows Ducks’ Adam Henrique the business of hockey can be cold

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Two nights ago, Adam Henrique hosted a charity event in Hoboken, N.J., to benefit the Movember Foundation, which raises money and awareness for men’s health issues. It is called Rico’s Soiree, an ode to his hockey nickname.

Wearing a mustache-themed white-and-black jacket to reflect the cause’s signature symbol, Henrique’s efforts have helped raise $60,000. More than 200 New Jersey Devils fans showed up to see him and some teammates play bartender. One forked over $5,000 to shave off the 27-year-old distinctive lip growth.

“The other night with the Movember stuff has been awesome,” Henrique said, standing in front of his stall at Nationwide Arena. “All month long there. The people, the Devils organization, supported me and went above and beyond putting all that stuff together.

“It was an awesome night. We had a great turnout and raised a lot of money. A lot of awareness for a great foundation. I guess it turned in to a bit of a going-away party.”

Henrique was looking back as he spoke within the Ducks’ dressing room. Little did he know that after representing the Devils on Thursday and countless other occasions over his seven-year career, General Manager Ray Shero would call him into a morning meeting to give him news he didn’t expect.

You’ve been traded.

So the center’s Thursday was spent collecting some belongings from his home, jumping on an airplane to Columbus and getting settled into the Ducks’ hotel. From there, it was going through introductions that lasted until Friday morning.

Cam Fowler, a former junior teammate with the Memorial Cup champion Windsor Spitfires, was a familiar face to have breakfast with and help move beyond the shock. […]
