The Bay Area awoke Monday beneath a blanket of thick smoke as multiple wildfires raged to the north across the state’s bucolic wine country, destroying homes and business, emptying hospitals, dropping ashes over San Francisco and forcing the panicked evacuation of thousands of residents to crowded shelters.
