Rock band Stone Temple Pilots made its return to the live stage Tuesday night at the Troubadour in West Hollywood to reveal its new lead singer. After sorting through some 15,000 video and audio submissions, guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz have chosen a new vocalist.

At least one of the rumors that was heavily circulated proved to be true as Detroit native and “The X Factor” season three runner-up Jeff Gutt took the stage with STP, kicking off the 13-song set with “Down.”

Sporting a new bleached out hair-do, the singer held his own during some of the band’s biggest cuts including “Wicked Garden,” “Sex Type Thing,” “Interstate Love Song” and “Trippin’ On a Hole in a Paper Heart.” The guys even debuted a few new things live including “Mellow,” which was anything but. Gutt even got the stamp of approval from a fellow Detroit native, MC5’s Wayne Kramer, who joined the band for MC5’s “Kick Out the Jams.”

All of these songs are such mainstream alternative rock staples and they’re so great live that they deserve to be heard that way.

Gutt did a solid job giving them life again and the rest of the band members proved that they still have a lot left in them. STP is slated to release a new album in 2018.

Gutt was announced as the new singer of STP during a live broadcast on SiriusXM’s Volume channel 106 in front of the 500-capacity venue which was filled with fans that scored tickets to the intimate affair via SiriusXM. The full concert will premiere on at 3 […]
