Temescal Canyon’s Kevin Smith is the HSGameTime boys water polo coach of the year
Kevin Smith finally got to take the winner’s plunge into the pool at the end of the season.
Smith was an assistant coach on two of the three Temescal Canyon boys water polo teams that experienced heartbreak in the CIF Southern Section finals. Fortunes changed for Smith and the program this season, as they ended with a 10-7 victory over Don Lugo in the Division 3 title match.
For this reason, Smith has been chosen the HSGameTime boys water polo coach of the year.
Temescal Canyon was one of the Inland area’s most successful boys water polo programs for many years under the guidance of former coach Damien Andrews. Smith has been able to keep the tradition going in his two years at the helm. The Titans captured the Sunbelt League title in unbeaten fashion for the eighth straight season and finished with a 21-11 record.
The Titans averaged 13.5 goals per match during the postseason, but it was strong defense at key moments down the stretch that helped the program break its championship match curse. Temescal Canyon held Don Lugo scoreless over the final 3 minutes, 43 seconds of the Division 3 final to seal the win.
