Teen killed in early morning downtown Riverside crash
A 17-year-old girl was killed when the vehicle she was riding in Monday morning crashed into a tree in downtown Riverside that Riverside police say may have involved alcohol, according to Riverside Fire Department officials.
The crash was first reported just before 5 a.m. at Second and Market streets, according to a fire department news release.
An 18-year-old driving a 2000 Honda Civic south on Market Street when he slammed into a tree near Second Street, Riverside police officials said in a statement.
Initial fire department reports stated the crash was at Third Street but police say it was at Market Sand Second streets.
“The vehicle sustained major damage to the front and side passenger area,” the fire department statement said.
Rescuers pulled the driver from the vehicle and they were taken to the hospital. Crews tried to rescue the unidentified teen using the jaws of life, but she died at the scene.
The cause of the crash is not clear but is under investigation but police say alcohol or drugs may be factor.
