An emergency southbound 215 Freeway pavement slab replacement job created more clogged lanes than usual from the Blaine/Third streets ramps past UC Riverside and south to March Air Reserve Base area on Thursday, June 15, according to the Caltrans traffic map.

A CHP traffic incident log describes the work starting around 1 p.m. as affecting the two right, or slower lines between the Blaine and University offramps.

Caltrans spokeswoman Terri Kasinga wrote in an email that the job was related to “a slab that has been breaking up and needed emergency repair.” The action work took about an hour this afternoon.

The clogged traffic does not bode well for commuters. Already there have been several accidents in both directions on the 215, involving up to five cars, with no injuries reported.

At 1 p.m., Caltrans requested a traffic break from the 60 Freeway at Main Street going southbound so the work could begin. The work was completed before 4 p.m.
