Smoke billows from underground tunnel near Riverside City College

Riverside city firefighters extinguished a fire that spewed smoke from an underground tunnel near Riverside City College on Tuesday evening, Dec. 19.

Firefighters did not find anyone in the tunnel or any toxic substances.

The operation prompted the closure of Olivewood Avenue in front of the college for about an hour.

Officials could not immediately be reached on whether a cause for the fire was determined.

Crews were recently on-scene at RCC. The report turned out to be smoke coming from an underground tunnel. Technical rescue, hazmat has identified there are no toxic substances. Units are getting ready to clear & road closures will open within the next 30 minutes.
