The Discovery Science Channel’s “How It’s Made” will feature Riverside’s Phenix Technology, which makes fire helmets, for its Thursday, Aug. 3 broadcast, with the initial showing set for 5:30 p.m.

The show will focus on Phenix’s First Due Contemporary helmet, designed the same year the company was founded, in 1972. The helmet has several variations, and was originally created for “the extreme conditions of the southwest United States” although it has since been widely used elsewhere, according to Phenix’s website.

The show will feature the steps for creating the thermoplastic shell helmet from the initial molding to a firefighter wearing one. The crew from “How It’s Made” were at Phenix’s Riverside plant and also at Accent Plastics in Corona to record the process.
