A driver died at the hospital after crashing into a pole at a gas station parking lot in Hemet, police say.

The driver, who was not identified because next of kin hadn’t been contacted, crashed at about 11:20 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, Hemet police Lt. Jeff Davis said in a news release Monday.

The driver was traveling eastbound on Florida Avenue toward Lyon Avenue when he swerved, traveled into a gas station parking lot, then crashed into a pole, Davis said.

This is the second fatal crash over the New Year’s weekend under investigation by Hemet police.

A 73-year-old Hemet man was killed in a two-vehicle crash shortly before midnight Friday, Riverside County coroner’s officials said Saturday. That man’s name had not been released Monday night.
