DOWN THE STRETCH

• Hoppertunity, idle since a sixth-place finish in the Dubai World Cup on March 25, returns to action Saturday in the $70,000 Comma to the Top Stakes at Santa Anita. The 6-year-old son of Any Given Saturday is better suited to longer distances, making the one-mile Comma to the Top a likely steppingstone for the Grade I Clark Handicap (Nov. 24) at Churchill Downs. “One thing about Hopper, he is a good horse,” trainer Bob Baffert told Santa Anita publicity official Ed Golden. “He’s got a lot of class behind him, he’s doing really well. He’s a barn favorite. He’s been around forever. Old Hopper, it seems like he’s been here for 10 years.”
• Local trainers Richard Mandella, Doug O’Neill and Bob Hess, Jr. already have their Breeders’ Cup hopefuls at Del Mar a week before the big event. Mandella is scheduled to saddle Avenge (Filly & Mare Turf), Retro (Juvenile Fillies Turf), Paradise Woods (Distaff) and Bal a Bali (Mile). O’Neill has Pavel (Classic), Piedi Bianchi,(Juvenile Fillies), Mopotism (Distaff), B Squared (Sprint), Guns Loaded (Turf Sprint), and Frank Conversation (Turf), and Hess has Imperative (Dirt Mile), Tell Your Mama (Juvenile Fillies) and American Pastime (Sprint).
