San Jacinto woman charged in wrong-way crash on 79 Freeway near Beaumont
A San Jacinto woman was charged with felony driving under the influence following a seven-car crash that shut down Highway 79 between Beaumont and San Jacinto for more than two hours last week, officials said.
Driver Conie Stone, 51, was the only person transported to a hospital on the evening of Feb. 1, according to California Highway Patrol reports. Other drivers suffered complaints of pain, but none required hospitalization. However, she was charged Monday with two DUI-related counts, as well as driving the wrong way causing injury to another person, the criminal complaint show.
Stone drove a 2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara the wrong way on the southbound lanes of the highway that night and struck a Chevrolet Camaro head-on, according to a CHP report. The Suzuki then hit a freeway median and careened into the path of a Lexus and a Volkswagen, then hit a Toyota truck and a Hyundai sedan.
Stone is scheduled to be video arraigned Tuesday afternoon at the Banning Justice Center.
