San Bernardino river bottom burns homeless encampment

By Doug Saunders A homeless encampment was at the center of a fire in a San Bernardino wash Friday.

SAN BERNARDINO >> A brush fire set a homeless encampment ablaze Friday afternoon at Orange Show Road and Tippecanoe in San Bernardino.

The fire sent a large plume of smoke in the sky and burned for about 2 hours in a wash in the 1800 block of Riverview Drive.

By 6 p.m., the blaze, dubbed the Riverview fire, had grown to 10 acres and firefighters requested additional brush engines to battle the blaze, according to a San Bernardino County firefighters on scene.

Shortly before 7 p.m., firefighters knocked down the fire and began mopping up.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
