Rutgers withdrew from a home-and-home football series scheduled for 2020 and 2021, UCLA announced Thursday after Athletic Director Dan Guerrero learned of Rutgers’ decision last week via email.

An agreement signed in 2009 originally set the series for the 2016 and 2017 seasons, but it was delayed to accommodate Rutgers’ series with Washington. Rutgers is expected to add Syracuse to its nonconference schedule in place of the Bruins, according to, reuniting the former Big East teams.

UCLA was scheduled to open its 2020 season against the Scarlet Knights at the Rose Bowl on Sept. 5 and play the away game of the series in New Jersey on Sept. 11, 2021. Rutgers will pay UCLA $500,000 within 30 days for canceling the series.

The only other nonconference opponent the Bruins have scheduled for 2020 is San Diego State in a road game on Sept. 19. The 2021 season is still scheduled to start with LSU at home on Sept. 4 with a nonconference finale at the Rose Bowl against Fresno State on Sept. 18.

UCLA currently has five home-and-home series scheduled against Power 5 teams:

  • Oklahoma (2018 and 2019)
  • LSU (2021 and 2024)
  • Michigan (2022 and 2023)
  • Georgia (2025 and 2026)
  • Wisconsin (2029 and 2030)
