Riverside Poly receives top seed for Division 3 boys water polo playoffs
The Riverside Poly boys water team received the No. 1 seed in Division 3 and a first-round bye as the CIF-Southern Section released playoff pairings Saturday.
Poly spent the first half of the season atop the Division 3 rankings but fell to No. 2 after losing to Whittier La Serna earlier this month. The Bears moved back into the top spot after La Serna dropped three of its final four matches. Poly will host Fullerton Troy or Simi Valley Royal in Thursday’s second round.
Ayala is seeded fourth in Division 3 and also has a bye in the opening round. The Bulldogs will host Huntington Beach Edison or El Segundo on Thursday.
Redlands East Valley, Murrieta Valley, Los Osos and Damien were not among the eight teams chosen to compete in the Division 1 bracket, which essentially is an Open Division in everything but name. That’s a big relief for this quartet of Inland-area powers, which now can compete for the championship in Division 2.
Redlands East Valley will host Palos Verdes in Thursday’s opening round, while Murrieta Valley hosts Aliso Niguel. The Baseline League teams will travel for their openers, Los Osos going to San Clemente and Damien to Santa Ana Foothill.
Temescal Canyon and Arlington received the No. 3 and No. 4 seed, respectively, in Division 5. Temescal Canyon has a bye and will host Hacienda Heights Wilson or Huntington Beach Ocean View in Thursday’s second round. Arlington will host Redlands in a first-round match Tuesday.
Beaumont and Temecula Valley are seeded third and fourth, respectively, in the Division 6 bracket. Valley View, Ramona and Fontana are the No. 2, No.3 and No. 4 seeds, respectively in Division 7.
