The crowd in the packed Riverside City Council chambers Tuesday, July 11, was split into two camps on whether a major overhaul planned for the Riverside Metropolitan Museum would require closing the downtown facility for three years.

The council heard from dozens of impassioned residents and museum volunteers but had not yet voted on the proposed closure as of midnight.

The city-owned museum, established in 1924, has suffered from budget and staff cuts and several management changes over the past decade.
