Riverside may rezone 69 sites for denser housing

To comply with state housing law, Riverside officials will consider rezoning about 300 parcels in 69 spots around the city to allow high-density housing such as apartments.

The proposal will be discussed at two public meetings Thursday, May 18, in the council chambers at Riverside City Hall, 3900 Main St. The planning commission will hear a presentation about housing plans at 9 a.m., and owners of properties that could be rezoned are invited to a 6 p.m. meeting.

This summer and fall, the planning commission and City Council will host public hearings on the zoning changes before a final decision. Rezoning the properties doesn’t necessarily mean housing will be built there, and existing businesses and other uses would be grandfathered in and keep operating.
