Redlands boys win third straight CIF tennis title

Although he had added up the numbers several times, Redlands High boys tennis coach Sean Comadena was still hesitant to celebrate, or to let any of players know what they had just accomplished.
Only once the final tallies had been confirmed with CIF officials moments after the conclusion of Friday’s CIF-SS Division 2 title match at the Claremont Club, was Comadena able to finally say, “We won.”
And once word spread to the anxious Terriers, that they had defeated Yorba Linda, 9-9, in a tiebreaker by just six games, a chant of two more words began to ring out: Three-peat.
“It’s just amazing,” Redlands No. 1 singles player Jansen Comadena, a junior, said of becoming a three-time CIF champion. “At the beginning of the season I didn’t know if we were going to be able to do as well as we have the last couple of years, but we all came together and worked really hard to get the win.”
The Terriers’ third straight title, coming in their fourth straight finals appearance, was just a little more impressive than the last two in that it came after Redlands moved up two divisions in the offseason.
Redlands went 23-0 and capped it off by defeating the division’s top seed on Friday.
“Division 4 the last couple years has been great, and everyone has been very supportive, but I think knowing that we went to Division 2 this year and did this was enormous,” Sean Comadena said. What can I say? It was a blast.”
After threatening to put the match away in the first round, the Redlands High boys tennis team felt things tighten up considerably down the stretch.
