Rancho Verde advances to second round after victory over Oak Hills

MORENO VALLEY — Officially, the playoffs began at 7 p.m. Friday. If the Rancho Verde Mustangs make the long post-season run they would like, they can mark the start of it an hour or so later.
For a half, Rancho Verde’s high-powered offense spun its wheels. However, when they plugged electric tailback Xavier Ugorji in and turned him loose, the Mustangs pulled away to a 28-8 victory over Oak Hills in a Division 3 game.
Rancho Verde (9-2) earned a road game against Santa Clarita Hart in next week’s quarterfinal.

“Honestly, I think we came out soft,” Ugorji said of the uncharacteristic first half. “There was a lot of joking around. We weren’t as prepared as we should have been.”
Rancho Verde coach Jeff Steinberg said he talked at halftime about the team’s body language, which he said was “not indicative of Rancho Verde football.”
It was a little hard to gauge Ugorji’s body language because his body was moving so fast. On the opening play of Rancho Verde’s second possession of the second half, he darted and shifted his way to daylight and a 51-yard gain that set up quarterback Brock White’s 1-yard keeper.
