Rancho Cucamonga homeowner shoots and wounds knife-wielding burglary suspect

A homeowner shot and wounded a knife-wielding suspected burglar in his garage Saturday morning in Rancho Cucamonga, according to a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department news release.

The suspect, whom authorities said was on probation supervision, ran from the garage and a vehicle left the scene at high speed. The incident was reported at 6:16 a.m.

A short time later, a woman called from Fontana to report that her adult son had been shot. Deputies confirmed that the son suffering multiple gunshot wounds was the suspect in the Carriage Place burglary and shooting, the news release stated.

Eric Hartwick, 35, of Fontana, was hospitalized at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton for treatment and will be booked into jail upon his release. He was found in possession of narcotics and is on Post Community Release Supervision.

The homeowner was not identified by name. He told deputies he heard noises in his garage and went to investigate, where he was confronted by the suspect burglarizing his vehicle. The suspect got out of the vehicle with a knife and advanced toward the homeowner, authorities said,
