Punctured gas line near UC Riverside prompts evacuation

A punctured gas line prompted the evacuation of an apartment building on the north edge of the UC Riverside campus Thursday afternoon.
The rupture occurred shortly after 2 p.m. at 950 W. Linden St. near Canyon Crest Drive, according to the Riverside city Fire Department.
Officials said a 2-inch natural gas line was breached by a construction crew, and the two-story Oban apartment complex was evacuated as a precaution.
Firefighters shut off the gas without incident, and summoned Southern California Gas Co. crews to make repairs.
UCR officials said Oban residents were being allowed to return as of about 4 p.m.
