A man was fatally shot early Monday morning at La Plaza Park in San Bernardino, officials said.

The shooting was first reported around 1:30 a.m. at the park at Mt. Vernon Avenue and Seventh Street, according to San Bernardino police authorities.

The unidentified man was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Officers at the scene were collecting evidence but provided little more information other than the man had died.

A group of neighbors — coffees in hand — were chatting about the shooting but said they hadn’t heard anything overnight. None wanted to be identified.

As two detectives spoke along the Victoria Street-side of the park, a dog with a thick rope tied to its collar, sniffed at them both and wagged its tail. Authorities said they weren’t sure if the dog belonged to the victim.

The case is still under investigation. Police ask anyone with information to call the San Bernardino Police Department at 909-384-5742.
