Orange County man could be sentenced to 25 years for deadly triple killing in Fontana
A 74-year-old Orange County man is expected to be sentenced to at least 25 years to life in prison next week after he pleaded guilty to killing three family members in a Fontana apartment complex at the beginning of the year.
During a pre-preliminary hearing on Nov. 8 at West Valley Superior court, Zafar Ali entered three guilty pleas for killing two women and a man on Jan 4, court documents show. Each charge carried a sentence of 25 years to life. He’s expected to be sentenced Dec. 8.

Fontana police say Ali shot his family members while most of them slept in an apartment in the 14500 block of Village Drive around 3 a.m. Jan. 4. Two women and a man — identified in a criminal complaint as Farhana Anwer, Tehseen Sabir and Mohummad Sabir — were pronounced dead at the scene. A wounded man escaped and found refuge in a neighbor’s apartment. A woman also ran out of the apartment unharmed, police said.
Authorities say a long-simmering family disagreement may have sparked the shooting; however, details surrounding the friction were not released.
Ali was visiting his family members, according to neighbors and investigators, and opened fire in the two-bedroom apartment with a modified living room where people slept. It’s unclear how many people lived in the unit.
Ali had arrived at the apartment only the night before and was visiting, police said; however, neighbors who live across from the family said they’d seen the 74-year-old man at the complex for at least two weeks prior to the shooting.
