Notre Dame and Hillcrest boys earn top seeds for CIF Southern Section basketball playoffs
Riverside is having a banner season when it comes to boys high school basketball, and two of the city’s best teams will enter the CIF Southern Section’s playoffs as championship favorites.
Notre Dame is the No. 1 seed in Division 3A, and the Titans open the postseason with a home game Wednesday night against Palm Springs. It a chance at redemption for the Titans, who were top-seeded last season but bowed out in the semifinals.
“Disappointment is an understatement for what happened in last year’s playoffs,” Notre Dame coach Robert Robinson said. “We have spent the past 11 1/2 months to prepare for another shot. We all learned from that experience. I learned, too, so I hope I’m better prepared to put our kids in the best possible position to win.”
Hillcrest is the No. 1 seed in Division 4AA, and the Trojans open at home Wednesday evening against Heritage. Hillcrest reached the quarterfinal round last season, the best postseason showing by the program in its brief existence.
“We’ve been a lot of teams ‘Super Bowls’ this year, in a few tournament and leagues, so I think we’re getting used to being a team to beat,” Trojans coach Jackson Wood said. “The goals is just to make sure we’re putting together quality possession each an every night. Hopefully that will carry us through.”
