NFL Week 8 preview: Predictions for every game
By Rich Hammond
LAST WEEK AGAINST THE SPREAD: 7-7
SEASON RECORD: 44-60-1
TEAMS ON BYE: Arizona, Green Bay, Jacksonville, Rams, New York Giants, Tennessee
THE WEEK 8 FORECAST
MINNESOTA VS. CLEVELAND
Kickoff: 6:30 a.m. (in London)
Outlook: Two new teams have arrived at Twickenham Stadium, where the Rams claimed victory last week. This figures to be another lopsided matchup unless the Browns can pull off some magic. Their quarterback rotation continues, and now falls back to rookie DeShone Kizer, who already has been benched for Kevin Hogan and Cody Kessler this month. It’s not going to help that the Browns’ most reliable offensive lineman, left tackle Joe Thomas, is out with an injury. The Vikings’ quarterback situation isn’t great either, but they do have running back Latavius Murray, who rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown last week. Cleveland’s run defense has been fairly strong under former Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, but the Vikings should control this one.
Player to watch: Everson Griffen, Vikings DE. This isn’t the guy Kizer wants to see upon his return to the starting lineup. Griffen is third in the NFL with nine sacks this season, and has at least one sack in each of his seven games this season. This has been quite a career for Griffen, the former USC standout who has made the Pro Bowl in each of his past two seasons.
Line: Vikings by 9.5
Pick: Vikings, 31-14
CHARGERS AT NEW ENGLAND
Kickoff: 10 a.m. (KCBS, Ch. 2)
Outlook: Who are these Chargers? One of the league’s laughingstocks for the first month of the season, the Chargers now have won three in a row, including a shutout of Denver last week, and would like nothing more than to go into their bye week with a road upset of the Super Bowl champions. That won’t be easy, because even though their offense has surprisingly sputtered at […]
