Man stops transient from stealing his truck outside Yucaipa business

A man jumped into his truck and stopped a Las Vegas transient who investigators say tried drive off with the vehicle outside a Yucaipa business, San Bernardino County sheriff’s officials said Tuesday.

The truck owner was at a business in the 12000 block of Adams Street Monday afternoon when officials say he noticed someone get into his pick-up truck.

The truck owner managed to jump into the passenger seat of the moving vehicle as the man, later identified as 29-year-old Erik Ramel Chu, tried to drive off, according to a sheriff’s statement. Chu then jumped out of the truck and the owner was able to safely stop the truck.

Deputies were able to track Chu down and take him into custody near the 35200 block of Yucaipa Boulevard, officials said.

Chu was booked at West Valley Detention Center on suspicion of grand theft auto.
