A man who offered someone a flier announcing a party on the UC Riverside campus tried to steal that person’s wallet, university police said.

About 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, the victim was walking on East Campus Drive near Big Springs Road when a dark gray Nissan sedan pulled alongside the victim.

The passenger got out and offered a flier for the party. As the man handed over the flier, he grabbed at the wallet, an alert posted on the UCR Police Department website said.

Two bystanders saw the incident and ran to the help the victim. The suspect got into the vehicle empty-handed and drove east on Big Springs.

UCR police said that though the university’s escort service does not operate during the summer session, community service officers are available to provide escorts on campus. Those requesting an escort should call UCPD dispatch at 951-827-5222, or 2-5222 from any on-campus phone. Dispatchers cannot accept text messages.
