Man crashes into vehicle during pursuit through Highland in stolen truck
A Highland 18-year-old crashed into an unsuspecting motorist during a pursuit through Highland streets in a stolen truck Wednesday afternoon, San Bernardino County sheriff’s officials said.
Just before 3:30 p.m., a Highland Station deputy spotted a GMC truck driving recklessly in the area of Central Avenue and Cypress Street and tried to pull the driver over, according to a news release, but the driver sped away.
The driver, later identified as Gerson Contreras, sped off north onto Victoria Avenue, officials said.
During the pursuit, Contreras struck another motorist in the area of Baseline Street and Boulder Avenue but continued fleeing from deputies, authorities said. The motorist that was struck was not seriously hurt.
The pursuit finally came to an end when Contreras lost control and struck the west curb line at Orchard Road and Terrace Drive sending the truck into an open field, the sheriff’s statement said. Deputies then arrested Contreras.
Through an investigation, officials learned the truck had been reported stolen the day before out of San Bernardino, officials said.
Contreras was booked into the West Valley Detention Center on suspicion of felony evading, grand theft auto and possession of stolen property.
