Man arrested on suspicion of illegally possessing Medjool dates
Deputies arrested and cited a man accused of possessing about 200 pounds of Medjool dates without proper documentation, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.
The arrest was part of an ongoing effort by law enforcement personnel to crack down on agricultural theft in the farming communities of Thermal, Mecca and Oasis, said Deputy Arnold Iniguez.
The suspect, Juan Carlos Ceja of Thermal, 59, allegedly was selling produce from a vehicle at 4:10 p.m. Friday on Avenue 66 near the 86 Expressway when deputies approached him and discovered the unsanctioned dates, which were confiscated by authorities.
Ceja also received a citation for allegedly selling produce without a permit, according to Iniguez.
“The deputies are continuing their investigation into reports of recent agricultural thefts in the area,” Iniguez said.
