La Serna sweeps Poly boys volleyball in D-5 semifinals
History was going to be made regardless who won Wednesday’s CIF Southern Section Division 5 semifinal between Riverside Poly and host La Serna.
Geoffrey Mike and Brian Marquez made sure it was the Lancers, who broke through an advanced to the divisional finals for the first time.
Mike had 11 kills and Marquez had eight and three aces to lead La Serna to a 25-22, 25-22, 25-17 victory.
La Serna (28-3), the No. 2 seed, will face No. 1 Cerritos (26-9), which defeated West Valley in three sets, for the Division 5 title Saturday at Cerritos College. CIF-SS will announce the time Thursday.
Joey Paulo had seven kills for Riverside Poly (23-3), which also looking to get to its first final.
The Bears were just simply overwhelmed by the Lancers, who drowned their opposition with play after play late during the first two sets before Riverside Poly caved in the third set.
The Lancers opened the final set by scoring seven of the first eight points. The Bears couldn’t cut into the deficit until scoring four of six points to trail 20-15.
Mike followed with a kill and an ace before Brandon Lugo drilled a spike to cinch the match.
“Volleyball’s a tough sport, a sport of momentum,” Poly coach Mike MacNeill said. “They are a great team. Our guys are a bunch of great players also.
“It was a fun match. At the end, it’s hard to keep going with the gas when you’re getting blocked and not being successful all the time. I can’t say enough that La Serna is a great team. Our guys battled well. It speaks volumes on how well our guys battled this year.”
