JURUPA VALLEY — John Ober knew Wednesday that he was starting so by Friday he was ready.
Ober ran for two touchdowns and passed for another as Patriot defeated Colton, 27-14, Friday night in a CIF Southern Section Division 12 first round playoff game at Rubidoux High School.
“All I can say is that ‘It’s good to be back,’” said Ober, who missed last week’s game with a dislocated knee but finished off the scoring against Colton with a 33-yard touchdown run.
Erik Garcia added a game-high 169 rushing yards and one touchdown as Patriot (8-3 overall) won its first home playoff game in program history.
“This means a lot for the program. We helped turn around its history,” Ober said. “We have a good group of guys and we worked our butts off over the summer for this.”
Patriot, the No. 1 seed from the River Valley League, moves on to play at Big Bear in the quarterfinals next week.
“We watched a lot of film on Colton and it played out well so we’re just going to do the same thing and keep the ball rolling,” Ober said.
Mario Fierro III had a team-high 63 rushing yards and scored on a late 28-yard run as Colton (6-5) finishes its season with three losses in its last five games.
“(Patriot) coached way better than we did tonight,” Colton coach Shawn Collins said. “We just didn’t execute and we did more to shoot ourselves in the foot than anything else.”
Patriot’s pooch attempt and recovery to start the game was flagged for a procedural penalty, but that didn’t stop the Warriors from getting on the scoreboard first as Devin Riley recovered a fumble to give the home team the ball and Garcia cashed in six plays later from 6 to take the lead.
