Tigers advance to State:
The Riverside City College men and women’s cross country teams advance to State Championships after finishing in second and seventh place, respectively, at the Southern California Cross Country Championships in Central Park, Calif.
They advance to the California Community College Athletic Association State Championships to be hosted at Woodward Park in Fresno.
The men finished second with a time of 1:48:0, trailing only Mt. San Antonio by three minutes and 15 seconds.
Enrique Villa, who earned the OEC Individual Championship and the 2017 OEC Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Year award, finished fourth with a time of 21:15.0.
The women’s team finished with a time of 1:41:55.
Sarah Hollis, who also won the OEC Individual Championship and earned the 2017 OEC Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Year award, placed second with a time of 19:05.8.
San Bernardino Valley qualifies for State:
The men’s cross country team finished fourth and the women’s team placed 12th at the Southern California Cross Country Championships to qualify for the CCCAA State Championships.
They are one of the top 14 teams that advance to State.
The men finished second with a time of 1:50:29, while the women came in at 1:50:44.
Carlos De La Torre led the men with a 21:21.0 fifth place finish and Alyssa Benavides led the women after coming in at 20:16.3 for 25th place.
Upper Iowa 92, Cal State San Bernardino 88:
Ajon Efferson scored 26 points as the Coyotes opened their season with a loss to Upper Iowa on the road.
Jacardo Hawkins and Dorian Butler followed with 15 and 13 points, respectively.
Meanwhile Blake McBride added 12 points and T.A. Dixon contributed 11.
Efferson, Hawkins and Butler each added eight rebounds.
