Hydrogen truck explosion prompts evacuations in Diamond Bar
By Brian Day
A truck hauling highly flammable hydrogen exploded along Golden Springs Road in Diamond Bar Sunday afternoon, prompting officials to evacuate area homes and businesses for fear of another blast, officials said.
The incident was first reported at 1:23 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of Golden Springs Road, near Brea Canyon Road, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. David Buckner said.
No injuries were reported in the initial explosion, he said. The driver had apparently realized there was a problem and gotten away from the truck before the blast.
Officials evacuated nearby homes and business for at least a quarter-mile around the truck as a precaution, authorities said.
“We’re still tying to get a handle on how serious this is,” Buckner said.
Nearby streets were closed, along with the onramps and offramps of the nearby 60 Freeway, officials said.
Los Angeles County firefighters were on scene dealing with the hazard.
More to come.
