How to help the loved ones of slain San Bernardino County deputy
The San Bernardino County sheriff’s union is raising money for a deputy who was fatally attacked while off duty on New Year’s Eve.
“Our hearts are heavy from the loss of our friend,” Sheriff’s Employees’ Benefit Association officials wrote in a message on their website about Deputy Larry Falce, 70, of San Bernardino, a 36-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department and its oldest sworn member.
Just before 11 a.m. Sunday, Falce was rear-ended when he stopped or slowed down to avoid hitting a dog in the road, authorities said. The other driver ended up violently punching Falce in the face, authorities said. Falce fell down, hit the back of his head on the sidewalk, and never regained consciousness. He was taken off life support two days later. Suspect Alonzo Leron Smith, 30, a transient, has been charged with murder.
