How to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the Inland area

This weekend residents across the Inland area are celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., and looking to inspire future generations.

Events include:

Riverside County

Moreno Valley

MLK Scholarship breakfast: 7:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 12, at the Moreno Valley Conference and Recreation Center, 14075 Frederick St. Rev. Charles Lee-Johnson, Ph.D., pastor, Corona Community Church, will speak at Moreno Valley College’s fifth annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Breakfast. The college will honor educator and activist Woodie Rucker-Hughes with the Community Legacy Award.Tickets are $30 and proceeds will help fund scholarships for students who won an essay competition on King’s Ware Lecture. 951-571-6101

Riverside

MLK Family Choir rehearsal: 7 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. Saturday. Park Avenue Baptist Church, 1910 Martin Luther King Blvd. The 100 voice choir of community singers of all ages will perform at the Riverside Clergy Association’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Birthday Celebration on Sunday, Jan. 14. 951-779-0088

Martin Luther King Jr. celebration: 4 p.m. Sunday Park Avenue Baptist Church, 1910 Martin Luther King Blvd. Dr. Terrance Roberts, one of the historic Little Rock 9 who integrated the Little Rock Central High School, will speak. The free event is sponsored by the Riverside Clergy Association. 951-779-0088

MLK Walk: Registration for the 25th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Walk-a-thon runs from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at Bordwell Park’s Stratton Center, 2008 Martin Luther King Blvd., Riverside. Walk begins at 10 a.m. A free shuttle bus from Riverside city College to the park will leave every 15 minutes. The theme is Silent No More: The March Continues, and the event is organized by the Riverside African American Historical Society. Registration is $15 and includes a commemorative T-shirt. Festivities to follow the walk include presentations, live music, a health fair, scholarship announcements and vendors.
