Free medical, dental and vision services will be available on a first-come, first-served basis during a health fair on Sunday, Oct. 29, at Indian Springs High School.

The 17th annual Bi-National Health Week commenced earlier this month in Denver, Colorado. San Bernardino is hosting the closing event.

The Mexican Consulate in San Bernardino, San Bernardino City Unified School District and other institutions have partnered to bring mobile services here for the uninsured. Representatives from the Tzu Chi Foundation, City of Hope, UC Riverside and the consulates of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Costa Rica are expected to attend.

This year’s platform is: “Health Unites Us All.”

“People cannot be whole if they cannot be healthy,” Superintendent Dale Marsden said last month. “When this fair is over, our commitment isn’t over.”

Last year’s Bi-National Health Week was held in Tonatico, Mexico, and benefited approximately 240,000. The complimentary fair last visited Southern California in 2007, when Los Angeles hosted that year’s inauguration event.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Sunday in the gym at Indian Springs High School, 650 N. Del Rosa Drive. The fair commences an hour later.

Attendees will receive a reusable bag full of fresh and healthy groceries courtesy of Tzu Chi. Free medical examinations for such issues as asthma, diabetes, mental health and cancer are offered.

Community resources will also be on-site.

The closing ceremony will be emceed by Juan Carlos Belliard, assistant vice president of community partnerships and diversity at Loma Linda University. Marsden is expected to be there, as is Helen Hopp Marshak, public health dean at Loma Linda University.

Conferences with asthma, mental health, cancer and diabetes experts begin at noon. At 12:30 p.m., a panel of officials from Tzu Chi, Molina HealthCare and City of Hope will discuss health care in the auditorium.

The signing of a commitment to health will conclude the festivities.
