Great Oak’s continued success renders Soles the cross country Coach of the Year
By Landon Negri
Even as the challengers get a little closer, the cross country machine keeps rolling at Great Oak under coach Doug Soles.
Great Oak’s boys and girls won their 10th and 11th state titles this season, warding off challenges from a strong Roosevelt team on the boys’ side and Clovis Buchanan for the girls.
For those accomplishments, Soles is once again the HSGameTime Cross Country Coach of the Year.
The Wolfpack boys won Division I for the fourth consecutive year at the CIF State Championships on Thanksgiving Weekend, taking Roosevelt’s best shot and coming away with a 15-point (75-90) victory.
Buchanan actually notched a win over the Wolfpack at the Woodbridge Invitational in September, but Great Oak returned the favor via a 22-point victory in the state meet. The Wolfpack girls have won six Division I title in a row, and seven of the last eight.
And if you think he’s getting bored with all this winning, think again.
The ultimate goal is always a national title, and Great Oak’s boys were sixth and girls eighth. Most teams would be happy with top-10 finishes, but the bar has been set high with three consecutive top-3 finishes for the girls and a boys team that was national champions two years ago.
