A grass fire Thursday behind a Highgrove home spread into a field, burning about an acre before it was stopped.

The non-injury blaze was reported at 3:20 p.m. in the area of Prospect Avenue and Spring Street, just east of Interstate 215, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Agency officials said the fire began in the backyard of a residence and spread at a moderate pace, burning eastward into open space, with the potential to grow to 20 acres.

However, crews quickly encircled the flames and stopped the forward rate of spread by 3:40 p.m., according to reports from the scene.

No homes or other structures were damaged.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
