Gov. Jerry Brown ordered flags at State Capitol be flown at half-mast Wednesday, Nov. 29, in honor of a Riverside soldier killed while serving in Iraq with the U.S. Army.

Cpl. Todd L. McGurn, 20, of Riverside died Saturday, Nov. 25 in Baghdad from injuries he suffered in a non-combat related incident that is under investigation, according to a news release from the governor’s office.

Brown and first lady Anne Gust Brown extended their condolences to McGurn’s family, saying he “bravely gave his life in service to our state and nation.”

McGurn also was remembered by the Riverside Police Department where he served as a police explorer from June 2014 to February 2016. In a Facebook posting, the department called him a great mentor with a huge heart.

McGurn was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.
