Galaxy facing big decisions as regular season concludes against FC Dallas
The final day of the Major League Soccer season is commonly known as Decision Day.
That’s also a good way to label the upcoming offseason for the Galaxy, as the rebuild begins for 2018 after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2008.
“All the players that are here are going to be looked at and evaluated,” Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid said. “I don’t know if everybody is going to be a part of us going forward.
“We started the moment I got here (looking at 2018), obviously a lot of it is observation of players, looking at what you think the areas you can improve your team are and trying to find possible solutions.”
The current roster has one final opportunity to leave a lasting impression Sunday when the Galaxy concludes their frustrating 2017 season on the road against FC Dallas (1 p.m., Spectrum SportsNet).
Among the key decisions looming are what the Galaxy will do with veterans like Jermaine Jones and Ashley Cole. Jones has played in 19 games, with 18 starts. Cole, in his second season with the Galaxy, has been a valuable commodity in the Galaxy’s defense.
“It is kind of in their court right now,” Cole said. “It is probably time for a big change in the club, and I think maybe it happens next season. Whether I’m in the plans, so far yes, but who knows. I’m 37, maybe they want to look a little bit younger.”
Cole’s contract, like Jones’, expires after this season. Jones told reporters that the Galaxy has a club option.
