The Galaxy coaching staff gained even more experience Tuesday with the official hiring of Dominic Kinnear as assistant coach.

Kinnear, 50, won MLS Cups in 2006 and 2007 and has recorded 166 career victories, second behind current Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid and former Galaxy coach Bruce Arena.

Kinnear began his new assignment Tuesday. He started the season coaching the San Jose Earthquakes, but was dismissed in June.

“With his resume as a coach, talent evaluator and architect of successful teams in our league, Dominic will be an invaluable addition to Sigi, Pete and our soccer operations staff as we continue to build our team,” Galaxy president Chris Klein said. “We are confident that this group will help us construct a competitive team for the rest of this season and into the future.”

Technical Director Jovan Kirovski had spent the previous weeks in the role of assistant coach.

The Galaxy will return to action Saturday against Colorado at 8 p.m. at StubHub Center.

Pele Van Anholt’s season is over after it was revealed that he had suffered a torn ACL in Sunday’s game against San Jose.

Van Anholt went down with an injury and was eventually taken off in the 26th minute. In an Instagram post, Van Anholt said he will be recovering for at least six months.
